What is breast reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction restores a natural, symmetrical appearance to the breast. Breast reconstruction helps maintain body proportion allowing clothes to fit better.
Breast reconstruction is both physically and emotionally rewarding for women who have lost their breast from breast cancer or those who lack breasts due to a congenital or developmental abnormality. The reconstruction of a new breast can improve self-image, self-confidence and quality of life.
Breast reconstruction may be performed immediately following a mastectomy or at a later date. Breast reconstruction consists of several stages. For immediate breast reconstruction, the first stage is usually started at the time of the mastectomy. Women who are good candidates for immediate breast reconstruction are those that are healthy don’t smoke, and the tumor has been completely eradicated by the mastectomy.
